St. Joseph’s Health Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

Our PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program offers 2 positions

PGY1 program experiences learning include:
Learning Experience Length

Required, Concentrated Learning Experiences

PGY-1 Resident Orientation 6 weeks
Emergency Services 4 weeks
Antibiotic Stewardship 4 weeks
Internal Medicine 1 4 weeks
Internal Medicine 2 2-4 weeks
Transitions of Care 4 weeks
Medical Surgical Intensive Care 4 weeks
Cardiovascular Care 4 weeks

Longitudinal Learning Experiences

Leadership 52 weeks, 1-2 hours a month
Pharmacy Clinical Consult Service Every 3rd weekend from August-June 16 hour minimum/weekend
Main Pharmacy Operations 4 hours once every week (1600-2000), starting in August
Longitudinal Research Project 52 weeks At least 2 weeks of dedicated research time annually. More time will be granted as needed based on the project
Teaching, Learning and Drug Information Longitudinal, all year. Time commitment TBD: if completing a teaching and learning certificate program, anticipate 5 days away from residency to complete in person requirements
Population Health Estimated time commitment: 1hr per week, on average

Elective Learning Experiences**

Ambulatory Care At discretion of the schedule Each elective rotation is designed to be 2 weeks in duration, but could be tailored to be longer if it will help achieve the residents goals for their career

Teaching/Precepting Elective

Opting for additional elective time in our required learning experiences is also possible, as long as no more than 1/3 of the year is spent in the same practice area

**Additional elective experiences may be developed based on resident interest. We are also always open to collaborating with other local institutions to provide residents with unique elective experiences

  • Examples of practice areas that could support electives: Diabetic Stewardship or Outpatient Oncology
  • Examples of custom off-site electives we have offered in the past: Addiction management, Pediatrics

*The main pharmacy operations experience is comprised of a 4 hour main pharmacy shift weekly and clinical consult service (pharmacokinetic and warfarin dosing) every third weekend. Program highlights:

  • Innovative pharmacy practice with greater than 80% of pharmacists embedded within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong collaborative practice, with pharmacy recognized as the highest rated clinical department on the Press Ganey physician survey
  • We support the completion of a Teaching Certificate Program and allow our residents the opportunity to precept IPPE or APPE students from local schools of pharmacy
  • Opportunities to attend and present research at local, state, and national conferences
  • Our residents attend the Midyear Conference hosted by ASHP and the Residency Research and Practice Forum hosted by NYSCHP annually
  • The Department of Pharmacy Services provides care to inpatients on a 24 hour basis, 7 days a week with the vision/goals of providing safe and effective pharmaceutical care to all patients. The pharmacy employs an integrated practice model with 5 days a week decentralized services to acute care nursing units and 7 day a week service to both the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Units.
  • St. Joseph’s Health is a non-profit, 451-bed community teaching hospital and health care network providing services to patients from Onondaga and 15 surrounding counties. St. Joseph’s Health offers general medical/surgical care, medical intensive care, surgical intensive care, labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care, emergency services, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, interventional cardiology, and infectious disease. It is home to the largest family medicine medical residency program in the Northeast.

Program Purpose/Description

The PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (ie, BCPS) and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Program Overview

The St. Joseph’s Health PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program strives to recruit and match with diverse, highly motivated candidates who exemplify our institutions core values of Reverence, Commitment to the Poor, Justice, Stewardship, Integrity, and Safety. Our goal is to prepare our residents to provide excellent patient centered, comprehensive, pharmaceutical care as a clinical pharmacist. Residents will acquire professional leadership skills and develop lifelong learning skills that will provide and maintain career satisfaction. Our program provides residents with a broad range of clinical experiences to launch their careers in whichever direction they desire. Each resident’s experience is tailored with customized elective opportunities to ensure their career goals are at the heart of the design of the program.

Our PGY-2 infectious diseases residency, in collaboration with Wegman’s School of Pharmacy, offers one position.

PGY2 program learning experiences include:

PGY2 Infectious Diseases (all rotations are 4 weeks in duration)
