Marshall Mahon, MD
Hometown: Brighton, NY (suburb within the greater Rochester metropolitan area)
Medical school: SUNY Upstate Medical University
Area of Interest/future practice plans: Most likely, I will provide general Family Medicine at an outpatient clinic. I am strongly considering joining a Family Practice group but running a totally independent practice is also very appealing. In either case, my aim is that most of my patients can come to me as a one stop shop for almost all of their outpatient medical care.
Why did you choose St. Joseph’s?
I spent a month here during medical school on an AI. Plenty of things stood out as particularly impressive. My month was spent on Orange team, the busiest and most demanding of the inpatient rotations. Despite their heavy workload, the residents I worked with were always willing to make time to help me learn and improve. The attendings I worked with made me feel like part of the team. However, just as important was that nothing stood out to me as particularly awful. Nobody can put on an act for a month, so I knew if I matched here, I would be happy. That is why I ranked St. Joe’s number 1, above the program in my hometown which, prior to my AI, would have easily been my top ranked program.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am a big fan of professional wrestling, specifically All Elite Wrestling. I trained and competed once as a professional wrestler prior to medical school. I am a big fan of Star Trek, my favorite being Deep Space 9, and Doctor Who. I enjoy making and repairing things, something that takes various forms. For example, I ferment chilies to make hot sauce. I can meats and chili. I built lifting platforms for my home gym. I am in the process of outfitting my apartment with handmade shelving. I rarely go out to eat because I enjoy making whatever I want myself.
What do you enjoy most about Syracuse/Central NY?
It is not that different from my hometown and I like my hometown. I don’t feel like there is anything missing from this area that I would need.
